There they were. The young-old man was about to be hung. But he didn’t have his face anymore. The friend already took his face back. To get someone else’s face, the young-old man had sacrificed his own face for good. “Do you think we should travel a little backward, when he, uh, you still have face?” asked Rebecca. The old man rolled his eyes. “Fine.” And zap! They were gone.
Rebecca and the old man saw a teenage version of the old man with his friend. A girl walked up to them. The three of them talked with each other. After a few minutes, the teenage old man walked away with the girl. The other boy stares as they leave. Rebecca realized the friend felt jealous. He was the third wheel.
“Wait. So, you actually can attract a girl. You’re not that bad for an average face. Then, why do you still have to steal faces when you can already attract a girl with that face?” said Rebecca to the old man.
“I guess I am not satisfied with just that one girl. Didn’t you see that the girl has average face, too? I want to level up so later I need to seek for prettier girl.”
“And when you find one, you become unsatisfied as well and then you look for more prettier girl and you never stop. But, pretty girls want face that meets their standard,” guessed Rebecca.
“Could be.”
“Oh, gosh,” Rebecca realized something. “Where did your teenage version go? We lose him!”
The two of them searched around. The old man looked under the table. Rebecca look inside the trash can. The old man turned to Rebecca.
“Really?” asked the old man. “You think I would hide in a trash can?”
“Well,” replied Rebecca. “You treat women like trash. So I assumed you would look in one to find one.”
“Why are you mad?”
“I'm not. I just don't agree with you. You just want a pretty face. There's more to a girl. She could be smart. She could be funny. But why can't be ugly or average looking?”
“That's just how girls treated me. So why can't I do the same?”
“Because a real girl won't do that.”
The old man and Rebecca continued searching in silence. The old man felt guilty.
“You know what,” said the old man. “It doesn’t matter anymore to find my real face. I deserve this. I’ll be living without face for the rest of my life and I promise I won’t steal any face again.”
“I keep your promise, but being faceless will scare the hell out of people. I am scared myself but I guess I get used to it by now.”
“So I guess people will get used to it, too.”
“Hell, no.”
“Well.”
“I really want to see you with your own face.”
“But I don’t like my own face, then and now, ever, even though I haven’t seen it for very long time. I still don’t like it. Shame on my parents who gave birth to me with a face like that.”
“Don’t you say that. You must be grateful with whatever you have.”
“It’s so painful. That old face will just remind me about all my sins, and sorrows, and regrets, all those wicked things that happen during my lifetime.”
Rebecca got silent. She was too young to understand all of the old man said. But she got an idea. “Hey, what if we get you a new face? A face that no one ever had before. I know someone who loves to draw a lot!”
“Uh oh, not that boy again.”
“Yes!”
Back at present time, Eggs laid on his bed scribbling notes in his notepad.
“There has to be a way to defeat him,” said Eggs. “What's his weakness? Hmm. Now that I think about it, he is obsessed with how he looks. Maybe I could torture him into releasing Rebecca and Mr. Trip. Actually, he could keep Mr. Trip. Life is better without him. But to get Rebecca back, I could call him ugly. Or maybe hire a group of girls to laugh at him and walk away. Hmmm…”
Zap! Suddenly Rebecca and the old, faceless man appeared in front of Eggs.
“I heard all what you’ve just said,” said the old man to Eggs.
“Uh-oh,” said Eggs. “Never mind that. Eh, but, which one do you prefer?”
“Eggs, you have to give the old man a new face!” said Rebecca.
“That’s much better!” Eggs cheered.
“No! He will give me the ugliest face ever,” the old man scorned.
“Well, we can let someone else decides for us. Someone who doesn’t know you,” said Rebecca to the old man. Somehow, Theresa came into her mind. Rebecca did miss her mother. But, did her mother know the old man? “I guess that will be fair enough?”
Both the old, faceless man and Eggs thought for a while.
“Well, let’s get things done!”
“Yeah!”
“I know the answer!” said Eggs.
“What face should I take?” asked the old man.
“My face”
Rebecca and the old man were both shocked.
“Why?!” asked the old man.
“I need a successor,” replied Eggs.
“In what? Aren't you younger than me? If anything, you should be my successor.”
“I’m going away to train in a secret location and I need someone to do my homework for me while I'm gone.”
“Fine, but I get to sleep in your room for free.”
Rebecca butts in.
“Wait,” cried Rebecca. “This is stupid. What happens when you return?”
“I don't know,” said Eggs. “We'll worry about that later.”
Poof. The old man took Eggs’ face.
To be continued ...?
This is the second story I wrote with Sam Pham, someone I met on Bottled. He initiated the first paragraph, as before.
Well, my bad, I don't know how to continue this and he doesn't have a clue as well. We've been working on this for too long, and now he's just got both a new job and a new, sexy Brazilian girlfriend(!?). So, I guess we will just leave it as it is, or ... do you have any idea as to help us end this story?
